What is the Best Greens Powder in 2024?

Welcome to my review of the best greens powders in the UK. I have spent the last three months sampling so many diverse supergreen supplements it’s a wonder my entire body hasn’t turned spinach colour!

Super green powders are some of the top-selling health supplements on the market ($952.5 million annually by 2031!), with brands competing on price, flavour, nutrient diversity, sustainability and a whole host of other qualities. Some brands go for a simple five-ingredient mix, while others, like Athletic Greens, go for 75 or more! But is more better?

In researching which is the ‘best,’ we ordered every one we could get our hands on and for weeks, the office was awash with tasting notes, detailed comparison charts of ingredients, and third-party testing reports. As a practising nutritionist, I considered the potential benefits of each in addition to their taste and sourcing profiles.

So read on to discover the best greens powders.

Our Top Green Powder

★★★★★

Phytality Supergreens

Phytality Supergreens are a sustainably produced eight-ingredient green powder containing marine phytoplankton: an ancient single-celled plant that may be our planet’s most nutritionally dense food. It is the highest plant source of B12 and the highest source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.

This unique formula also contains fermented chlorella, which Phytality also produces carefully, plus wheatgrass, barley grass spirulina, alfalfa, ashwagandha root and probiotics. Everything about this premium powder says quality and transparency.

At just £1.66 a serving, it’s a complete steal – much cheaper than most of the high-quality powders on this list! For me, it’s the right balance between purity, price and breadth of ingredients.

The Best Greens Powders of 2024

Phytality Supergreens

phytoplankton supergreens

After thorough research and analysis, my choice for the Best Overall greens powder of 2024 is Phytality Supergreens.

This powerful supplement, made by an exciting Australian brand, offers a unique blend of nutrient-dense ingredients, including marine phytoplankton, the highest plant source of Omega-3s.

Phytality Super Greens has eight basic ingredients, which, in my view, is more than enough.

Phyality produces its own sustainable phytoplankton (considered by health guru David Wolfe as one of the most exciting superfoods ever discovered), giving this powder an edge.

Phytality Supergreens also includes vegan probiotics, wheatgrass, barley grass, ashwagandha, spirulina and alfalfa to help support a healthy gut and immune system.

Pros

  • Highest-quality phytoplankton & fermented chlorella are grown in-house by Phytality
  • Just £1.66 per serving, making it much cheaper than something like Athletic Greens
  • 190mg of essential fatty acids per scoop
  • Genuinely delicious pineapple flavour
  • Sustainable & Tested for heavy metals

Cons

Some may wish for more than eight ingredients

Your Super Super Green Mix: B-Corp Certified Green Powder:

Super Green by Your Super UK is a supplement that not only claims to support overall health but also aids in weight loss efforts. It contains no sweeteners of any kind, which I approve of.

Firstly, I love that Your Super UK is a B-Corp-certified company which focuses on sourcing high-quality certified organic ingredients from small farmers. This is refreshing in the green powder sector – so flooded by poor quality.

As to the product itself, Super Green Mix boasts six powerful ingredients, each contributing to weight loss and overall well-being:

Your Super.com Supergreens
  1. Wheatgrass (Germany): This ingredient is rich in chlorophyll, flavonoids, and vitamins A & E, which help support detoxification and reduce oxidative stress.
  2. Barley Grass (Germany): Loaded with essential nutrients like B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and iron, it contributes to energy production and metabolism.
  3. Moringa (India): With its high content of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, moringa leaves promote a healthy metabolism and energy levels.
  4. Baobab (Ghana): This fruit is an excellent source of antioxidants and vitamins, particularly vitamin C, and helps support the immune system while aiding in weight loss.
  5. Spirulina (Chile/Italy): This microalga is the highest natural source of protein, boosting energy and strength while supporting muscle growth and recovery.
  6. Chlorella (Portugal): Rich in essential minerals and chlorophyll, chlorella supports detoxification, digestion, and weight management.

Each 150-gram container of Super Green provides 30 servings with a slightly earthy, green taste.

Pros

  • Fully organic
  • Sustainable packaging
  • Transparent on sourcing

Cons

  • Some users aren’t too keen on the taste
  • Not clear if the chlorella is cracked-cell wall

NGU Supergreens Powder (Organic): Best Value

NGU Supergreens Powder is an excellent choice for those looking for an energy boost. It looks like a company focussing specifically on Amazon, but I like their attention to organic, with no bulking agents or fillers.

NGU Supergreens Powder is a 100% natural, vegan super green powder that is free from heavy metals. In my opinion, this is a huge plus, as many green powders can’t say this.

It contains a combination of nine amazing cold-processed superfoods for complete nutrition, including Baobab, Flaxseed, Maca Root, Matcha Tea, Barley Grass, Wheat Grass, Acai Berry, Chlorella, and Guarana. These ingredients provide over 20% lean protein and a healthy dose of vitamins and nutrients to help energize your day.

NGU Supergreens Powder is organic, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free and is made in the UK. It is 100% natural, with no fillers, bulking agents, or artificial ingredients. It is also non-GMO and contains small amounts of natural caffeine. The Vegan Society and Organic Farmers and Growers certified the supplement, so you can trust its purity and quality.

Tastewise, it is not my favourite, I have to be honest. But as such a great price I can put such qualms aside and just get it down!

Ingredients: Baobab 20%, Flax Seed 12%, Maca 12%, Wheatgrass 10%, Barley grass 10%, Chlorella 10%, Açai 10%, Matcha 9%, Guarana 7%

Pros

  • Excellent value
  • Fully organic

Cons

  • Does contains caffeine from green tea
  • Taste is not that great!
Quick NGU Supergreens Review

Overall, NGU Supergreens Powder is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a natural energy boost that also provides immune support and antioxidant benefits. It does contain guarana, which can be stimulating for some, but overall a decent product. It contains 30 servings so it’s also very affordable for a monthly supplement.

LEAN Superfood Daily Greens

Lean with Lily Supergreens

LEAN Superfood Daily Greens, by health influencer Lilly Sabri, is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a greens powder specifically designed to support digestion and gut health.

This is becoming a hugely popular choice due to Lilly Sabri’s massive social media followings, and overall, I conclude it’s a good product. LEAN Superfood Daily Greens contains a simple blend of six powerful superfoods: Kale Leaf, Barleygrass, Chlorella, Spirulina, Maca, and Baobab. It’s also packed with probiotics and digestive enzymes to help with bloating and digestion.

Its focus on gut health distinguishes LEAN Superfood Daily Greens from many other greens powders. It contains a prebiotic and probiotic blend, including Inulin (a great source of fibre) and seven probiotic strains. With 500 billion CFUs per serving, it provides more probiotics than your typical serving of yoghurt.

The supplement also includes a digestive enzyme blend to support digestion. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of digestive enzymes as a daily addition to the diet – I tend to recommend them for short periods so the body doesn’t get too lazy – but this is a small complaint.

I’m even less keen on their use of maltodextrin, which is a carbohydrate with a high glycemic index. Especially with thaumatin and stevia in there, it’s unnecessary, in my opinion.

Quick LEAN Superfood Daily Greens Review

This is a pleasant-tasting and well-put-together superfood blend. I don’t do well on caffeine and wouldn’t consume maltodextrin, but if you’re fine with those two, it’s definitely worth stocking up on.

Pros

  • Nice, simple selection of ingredients
  • Backed by Instagram superstar Lily Sabri
  • May help digestion
  • Well priced

Cons

  • Kale is the biggest ingredient, over more premium choices
  • Some users really struggle with the flavour
  • Doesn’t mix that well with water
  • Contains maltodextrin

Quick Free Soul Greens Powder Review

FS Greens is a huge brand and a major contender to Athletic Greens. Overall I like their formula and appreciate the absence of sugars, artificial sweeteners, flavourings, or fillers. However, I could find no information on their site whatsoever about the sourcing of ingredients which for me is a red flag.

Kiki Health Nature’s Living Superfood

Kiki Health’s Organic Greens Superfood Powder is a comprehensive blend of raw green foods and plant juices that provides a balanced and carefully selected range of natural organic ingredients.

It is an ultra-fine, soluble powder that supports all aspects of your everyday nutritional requirements and is easily mixed with juice, water, smoothies, or your favourite beverage.

Kiki Health Nature's Living Superfood

The powder contains 36 alkalizing ingredients, including green foods, plant juices, sea vegetables, enzymes, bacterial cultures, and algae, providing many nutrients in just a teaspoon. It’s got nettle, which is an underused ingredient in many green powders, burdock, parsley and the wonderful amla – Indian gooseberry – which is one of the highest natural sources of vitamin C.

The supplement is naturally free from gluten, with no artificial colours, preservatives, sweeteners, or fillers, and is packed in an amber glass bottle (which I love) for optimum nutritional preservation, freshness, and purity.

Kiki Health is also carefully tested for heavy metals, which is a huge plus.

Kikis Nature's Living Superfood Review Verdict

Kiki’ Organic Nature’s Living Superfood is NOT diluted with inexpensive Apple, Fibre, Rice, Bran, Barley, Malt, F.O.S., Oat Bran, Rice Solids, large amounts of Lecithin or anything else, which is a huge plus. The ingredients are one of the best balanced blends I’ve tried, it’s all organic, and they use amber glass. It’s more expensive than many but you get what you pay for. I think this is a fantastic brand.

Phytality Pure Marine Phytoplankton: Best for Acne:

Phytality Marine Phytoplankton Powder

When it comes to acne, there’s something wonderful about pure marine phytoplankton. In many ways, this is the most exciting green powder of them all. It’s a fascinatingly diverse source of complex plant nutrition and the most complete wholefood vegetarian source of long-chain fatty acids we have.

For acne, I’ve seen really good results with this for my clinical patients. Perhaps it’s the tiny cell size, which makes it very absorbable, or perhaps the weird and wonderful rare carotenoids and antioxidants, but this stuff works wonders.

It’s a premium product, which may put off some, but I consider this one of the most potent tools in the arsenal when it comes to filling nutrition gaps, alkalizing, and of course, skin health.

Phytality Marine Phytoplankton Review Verdict

This potent supplement is nature’s closest offering to a wholefood multivitamin. It’s powerful, sustainably produced, completely vegan, and, in my view, the best kept secret in nutrition. Awesome!

Udo’s Choice Beyond Greens

Best Greens Powders for Immunity: Udo’s Choice Beyond Greens

Udo’s Choice Beyond Greens is a top product from a brand I’ve been using for over a decade. What sets Udo’s Choice apart is its rich blend of vegan greens from 10 different organic sources, including alfalfa, barley, wheat, rye, oat grass powders, spirulina, dulse, and chlorella. These ingredients provide a wide range of essential nutrients, including protein, enzymes, vitamins, and essential fatty acids.

One notable feature of Udo’s Choice Beyond Greens is the inclusion of fermented grasses, which act as a form of pre-digestion. The fermentation process breaks down the fibrous cell walls of the greens and vegetables, making them easier to digest and increasing the bioavailability of nutrients. This means less chance of indigestion, gas, and bloating. Moreover, Beyond Greens is packed with phytonutrients, antioxidants, B12, Vitamin K, iron, and iodine, which are essential for supporting overall health and a strong immune system.

Not only is Udo’s Choice Beyond Greens a powerhouse of nutrition, but it is also versatile in its usage. It can be taken with water, added to smoothies, or even incorporated into baking recipes, making it convenient to incorporate into your daily routine. The environmentally friendly packaging processes and the brand’s commitment to respecting all ingredients further enhance its appeal.

Udos Beyond Greens
Review Verdict

Its blend of organic vegan greens from 10 different sources, along with fermented grasses and a rich array of nutrients, make it a powerful and versatile choice for supporting overall health and a strong immune system.

Dr Schulze Superfood Plus

Dr Schulze’s SuperFood Plus was one of the first green powders on the market, and it’s still awesome! This nutrient-rich powder is made up of a blend of algae, green grasses, vegetables, and fruit.

The high protein content of this product comes from spirulina algae, blue-green algae, chlorella, barley grass, wheat grass, alfalfa grass, and non-fermentable nutritional yeast. These ingredients also contain vitamins B12 and B6, which aid normal energy levels and support the immune system, psychological function, and nervous system. Moreover, the B6 present in this product may particularly support women looking to optimize hormone regulation.

Dr Schulze Superfood Plus

SuperFood Plus is an excellent source of fibre, which helps maintain digestive health, and phytonutrients, which provide antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that protect the body from free radicals. The powder is also rich in minerals, such as iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which are crucial for overall body health.

To preserve the nutritional vitality and integrity of the botanical ingredients, they are naturally dried and then tumble-blended for less than 2 minutes. The cell walls of the chlorella are gently cracked to ensure optimal absorption. The spirulina is grown in Hawaii using deep-well volcanic water, while the chlorella is grown in enclosed, toxin-free, freshwater containers in the USA.

SuperFood Plus also contains purple dulse seaweed, which is rich in protein, omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, vitamin B12, and trace elements needed by humans. Additionally, acerola cherry, rosehips, palm fruit, and lemon and orange peels provide antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to further support overall body health.

Dr Schulze's SuperFood Plus Review Verdict

Dr Schulze’s SuperFood Plus is a good powder with a nice mixture of ingredients. I would like to see more info about testing for heavy metal contamination and where they source ingredients. Still, this is an old school classic with a lot to recommend it.

Well, if you really have to have chocolate in your green powder, this could be the one! And good organic cacao is a superfood in its own right too.

The Amazing Grass company has been producing organic and all-natural products for over three generations, perfecting a simple process of slow growth, deep roots, and harvesting at peak nutrition. Their commitment to quality is reflected in their recognition by the USDA as organic, meaning that 95% or more of their ingredients are certified organic.

Amazing Grass Green Superfood

Amazing Grass Superfood in Chocolate flavour is a popular blend of alkalizing farm-fresh greens and wholesome fruits and veggies with nutrient-rich superfoods. This contains 7 alkalizing greens, such as wheat grass, spirulina, and chlorella, and 9 antioxidant-rich superfoods, like acerola cherry, acai berry, beetroot, and maca root.

This green superfood is free from added sugar, gluten, and GMOs. It is also suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Simply add one scoop of the powder to 230ml or more of your preferred beverage, craft the ultimate smoothie, or add it to your favourite recipe to enjoy its nutritional benefits.

NB, it does have silicon dioxide in it, which is a slight downside, in my opinion.

Which Greens Powder do I not Recommend?

Hux Green Powder – I took against this for two reasons. One, they use sucralose as a sweetener which some studies show to be pro-inflammatory. Two, they use ferrous fumarate, a form of iron bad for the microbiome.

Supergreen Tonik – I was excited when I first saw this, especially the Nootropic elements. But it contains ferrous fumarate.

What are Greens Powders?

Green powders are dietary supplements made from a variety of green vegetables, fruits, herbs, and other plant-based nutrients. The primary constituents often include leafy greens such as spinach and kale, along with algae like spirulina and chlorella. Some formulations may also incorporate additional elements like probiotics, enzymes, and vitamins to enhance their nutritional profile.

The powders are typically processed through freeze-drying or dehydration techniques to preserve the integrity of the nutrients. The end product is a concentrated form of various phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals. However, it’s worth noting that the bioavailability and efficacy of these nutrients can vary depending on the quality of the ingredients and the manufacturing process.

Green powders are commonly consumed as a supplement to a balanced diet, especially for individuals who find it challenging to meet their daily vegetable intake. They can be mixed with water, smoothies, or incorporated into meals, offering a convenient way to boost nutrient intake.

Nevertheless, while green powders can serve as a supplementary source of nutrients, they are not a substitute for whole fruits and vegetables. Whole produce provides a broader spectrum of nutrients, as well as essential fibres and compounds that may not be present in green powders. Therefore, for optimal health benefits, it is advisable to include a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet in addition to considering any supplementation.

Are Greens Powders Beneficial?

If you’re not a huge fan of synthetic vitamins, superfood powders are the best way to fill gaps from pure whole food sources. Their benefits are as follows:

  1. Nutrient-dense: Greens powders typically contain a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are important for overall health. This can be especially helpful for individuals who struggle to consume enough fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.
  2. Antioxidant-rich: Many greens powders contain antioxidant-rich ingredients, such as spirulina, chlorella, and wheatgrass. Antioxidants help protect the body against oxidative stress, which can contribute to chronic diseases.
  3. Anti-inflammatory: Some greens powders contain anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as turmeric and ginger, which can help reduce inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is linked to a range of health problems, including heart disease and cancer.
  4. Digestive support: Greens powders can also support digestive health due to their high fibre content and digestive enzymes. They can help promote regularity and support the growth of healthy gut bacteria.
  5. Energy boost: Some greens powders contain ingredients like matcha and maca, which can help boost energy levels and reduce fatigue.

What about the Downsides of Green Powders?

I would like to point out a few downsides associated with green supplements that you should be aware of:

  1. Risk of contamination: There is a possibility that green supplements may contain contaminants like heavy metals, pesticides, or bacteria, depending on the manufacturing process or source materials. To minimize this risk, I always recommend choosing high-quality, reputable brands and checking what tests they have conducted. Cheap is not always worth the risk!
  2. Digestive discomfort: Some clients have reported gastrointestinal issues, such as bloating, gas, or diarrhea, when they first start taking green supplements. This is usually temporary, and I generally suggest starting with a smaller dose and gradually increasing it to minimize discomfort.
  3. Misleading marketing claims: Be aware that some manufacturers may make exaggerated or misleading claims about the health benefits of their green supplements. I encourage you to do thorough research and rely on credible sources when evaluating these products’ potential benefits and downsides.

Who May Not Benefit From Greens Powders

While greens powders can be a great way to supplement your diet with essential nutrients, there are some individuals who may not benefit from them or should avoid or limit their intake.

  • People with certain medical conditions: Some medical conditions, such as kidney disease or hyperkalemia, can cause an excess of certain minerals that are found in greens powders. In these cases, limiting or avoiding greens powders that contain high levels of these minerals may be necessary.
  • People taking certain medications: Certain medications can interact with the ingredients in greens powders. For example, some greens powders contain vitamin K, which can interfere with blood-thinning medications such as warfarin.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women: While most greens powders are safe for pregnant women, it is always best to consult a healthcare provider before adding any new supplements to your diet.
  • Children: While greens powders can benefit children, it is important to choose a product specifically formulated for their age group and to consult with a healthcare provider before giving them any supplements.
  • People with allergies or sensitivities: Greens powders may contain ingredients that some individuals may be allergic or sensitive to, such as wheatgrass, spirulina, or bee pollen. It is important to read the ingredient list carefully and avoid any greens powders that contain ingredients you are allergic or sensitive to.

My Criteria for Selecting the Best Greens Powders

When selecting the best greens powders, I considered several criteria. These include:

  1. Quality and Purity: We look for greens powders that are made with high-quality, pure, and natural ingredients without any harmful additives, preservatives, or fillers.
  2. Nutrient Density: We prioritize greens powders that are packed with a variety of nutrient-dense ingredients, including vegetables, fruits, herbs, and superfoods. We also look for powders that contain a balanced blend of macronutrients and micronutrients.
  3. Transparency: We favour brands that provide detailed information about their products, including a complete list of ingredients, dosage recommendations, and potential side effects.
  4. Scientific Research: We look for greens powders that have been clinically tested and proven to provide health benefits.
  5. Customer Reviews: We also take into consideration the feedback of customers who have tried the product and shared their experiences and opinions.
  6. Price and Value: We take into account the overall value of the product, including its price point, the quantity of the product provided, and any discounts or promotions that may be available.

Sourcing and Processing of Typical Green Powders

The nutritional value of green powders can be significantly impacted by the sourcing and processing of their ingredients in several ways:

  1. Sourcing: The nutritional value of the ingredients in green powders often depends on where and how the ingredients are grown. For instance, fruits and vegetables grown in nutrient-rich soil tend to have higher nutritional value than those grown in nutrient-poor soil. Similarly, ingredients grown without the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers tend to be healthier than those grown with these substances. Organic sourcing often ensures high nutrient content and less exposure to harmful chemicals.
  2. Harvesting: The harvesting time can affect the ingredients’ nutritional value. For example, many fruits and vegetables have the highest nutritional value when they are fully ripe. Their nutritional value may decrease if they are harvested too early or too late.
  3. Drying Process: The drying process can significantly affect the nutritional value of the ingredients. Some methods, like freeze-drying or air-drying at low temperatures, help preserve the nutrients in the ingredients better than others, like high-heat drying. The goal is to remove water while keeping the nutritional integrity of the ingredients intact.
  4. Processing: The ingredients’ processing into a powder can also impact their nutritional value. Some methods may cause the ingredients to lose some of their nutrients, while others can help preserve them. For instance, using high heat or certain types of solvents during extraction can degrade the nutrients. Cold pressing or low-heat grinding are preferred for better nutrient preservation.
  5. Storage and Packaging: After the green powder has been made, the way it is stored and packaged can further affect its nutritional value. Heat, light, and air exposure can degrade certain nutrients over time. Therefore, green powders should be stored in a cool, dark place and packaged in air-tight, light-resistant containers.
  6. Additives: Some green powders may contain additives like sugars, artificial flavours, or preservatives, which can affect not only the overall nutritional value of the product but also its health impact. It’s important to check the label for any unnecessary additives.

Sustainability and ethical impact of green powders?

The sustainability and ethical implications of producing and consuming green powders can be multifaceted, involving both production and consumption’s environmental, social, and economic aspects.

  1. Agricultural Practices: Green powders are made from various plant-based ingredients, and how these plants are grown can have significant environmental impacts. Conventional agriculture can deplete soil nutrients, contribute to water pollution due to pesticide and fertilizer runoff, and lead to loss of biodiversity. In contrast, organic farming practices tend to be more sustainable, promoting soil health, reducing pollution, and supporting biodiversity. However, it’s important to note that organic farming can also have challenges, such as lower yields and higher costs.
  2. Resource Usage: The production of green powders requires resources such as water, energy, and land. Resource use efficiency can vary widely depending on the specific ingredients and methods used to grow, harvest, process, and package them. For instance, freeze-drying is a common method for preserving the nutrients in green powder ingredients, but it can be energy-intensive. Similarly, the packaging of green powders can have a significant environmental footprint, especially if non-recyclable materials are used.
  3. Transportation: Ingredients for green powders often come from all over the world, which means that their transportation can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Locally sourced ingredients tend to have a lower carbon footprint.
  4. Fair Trade and Worker Rights: From an ethical standpoint, it’s important to consider how the workers who grow, harvest, and process the ingredients for green powders are treated. Fairtrade practices ensure that workers are paid a fair wage and work in safe conditions. Some green powder companies may also support local communities through social initiatives.
  5. Consumer Waste: The packaging of green powders can contribute to waste if not recyclable or compostable. Consumers can contribute to sustainability by choosing products with eco-friendly packaging and disposing of it responsibly.

Are Green Powders a Waste of Money?

Green powders are not a waste of money, and here’s why:

  1. Convenience: Green powders provide an easy and convenient way to incorporate essential nutrients into your daily diet. Consuming enough fruits and vegetables daily can be challenging in today’s fast-paced world. You can significantly increase your nutrient intake without much effort by adding a serving of green powder to your smoothie, juice, or water.
  2. Nutrient Diversity: Green powders often contain a wide range of nutrient-dense ingredients, such as spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass, and various other fruits and vegetables. This diverse array of nutrients can be difficult to obtain through diet alone, especially for those with limited access to fresh produce or dietary restrictions. Green powders offer a convenient solution to this problem, providing a concentrated source of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
  3. Cost-Effectiveness: Sourcing and purchasing individual ingredients found in green powders can be expensive and time-consuming. Green powders provide an affordable alternative by combining multiple high-quality ingredients into a single product. When you consider the convenience, nutrient diversity, and quality of ingredients in green powders, they can be a cost-effective addition to your health regimen.
